Books

Note: Most of us like to see book covers, so I’ve included some links below. Many of the book links go to The Needle Arts Book Shop for two reasons: 1) I’ve received super service from Marsha and 2) it’s a Canadian source. Most books are available at a variety of sources, maybe even your local library.

Brown-Reinsel, Beth: Knitting Ganseys; traditional techniques; design process and patterns

Domnick, Sabine: Cables, Diamonds and Herringbone; instructions on designing sweaters including underarm gussets; 7 Gansey sweater patterns; 41 pages of pattern stitches; a little history

Ellis, Fiona: Inspired Cable Knits

Hollingworth, Shelagh: Traditional Aran Knitting and The Complete Book of Traditional Aran Knitting

Lavold, Elsebeth:  Viking Patterns for Knitting

Leapman, Melissa ~ Cables Untangled and Continuous Cables

Maloney, Annie:  Annie Maloney Cable Knitting Series ~ Cable Knitting Handbook

Morgan, Gwyn: Traditional Knitting Patterns of Ireland, Scotland, and England

Pearson, Michael: Micheal Pearson’s Traditional Knitting: Aran, Fair Isle and Fisher Ganseys

Szabo, Janet:  Cables: Volume 1 and Aran Sweater Design

Starmore, Alice: Celtic Collection, Sweaters for Men

Thompson, Gladys: Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys & Arans

Arans & Celtics by Edited by Rick Mondragon, Elaine Rowley

Harmony Guide to Cables and Arans edited by Erika Knight ~ be sure to check errata for this book! — there are quite a few errors from very minor to major ones like the instructions don’t match the name and swatch picture; the original version from the ’80′s (?) is the best – it was organized by # of sts per cable that made designing your own combinations easier; I’ve created a downloadable spreadsheet on my website for the 2007 version that allows you to filter by # of sts, rows, name and lots more
